National Art Gallery

Description

The Museum Building, in one corner of Sultan’s Park, houses the National Library, various cultural centres from countries around the world and this exhibition space, which has regular displays of Maldivian art. There is sadly no permanent collection on display, but group and individual shows are regularly held and the biennial Maldives Contemporary exhibition is a great chance to see the varied art produced in the country, from photography to painting and conceptual works.

Established in 1999 by the Government of Maldives, The National Art Gallery was built to source and collect Maldivian art of the past and present. The view is to form a permanent collection while organising displays and exhibitions of Maldivian and international art.

The exhibitions happens here on a regular basis providing opportunities for Maldivian artists to develop and excel in their professions. They facilitate various educational opportunities as well as networking. The Art Gallery is currently bringing together work from both Maldivian and international artists from all across the world.
