Niodior

Niodior (or Niodor) is an island in Senegal located in Sine-Saloum, opposite the peak of Sangomar.

Administration
Niodior, the village, is an administrative center in the districtof of Foundiougne in the area of Fatick. This village counts five districts: Baback, Damal, M’bine Mack, Sindiala and Médine. Niodior was created by Bande Niambo who originated from Gabou. The only religion of the village is Islam; most Muslims are talibés of Cheikhna Cheikh Saadbou ibn Cheikh Muhammad Fadr. The village counts two elementary schools and a French high school, a school and an Arab high school. The high school of Niodior is one of best in the area of Fatick. Several times, its pupils were awarded by the regional council of the area.
Geography
The closest localities are Djifer, Dionewar, the point of Sangomar, Diogane Sosse, Falia, MarLodj, Kololi, Kotu, Bakote, Fajara and Betanti.
The vegetation includes in particular mangrove swamps, palm trees and baobab trees.
Economic activities
The inhabitants of this village devote themselves to fishing, harvesting and the drying of the shells and wild oysters, resold in Dakar, in Gambia, in Kaolack or in Casamance by intermediaries.
As there hardly exist salary earners on the island, the women and the young men leave the village for seasonal employment.
The medical infrastructures are very limited.
Displacements are done using engine boats.
Niodior was little known until the publication by Fatou Diome, born in the island in 1968, from her book the Belly of the Atlantic.
With the international success of this work, many tourists decided ever since to discover this island in which the novelist passed her childhood.
The island was also the witness of several significant demonstrations, such as those related to environmental problems of the coastal lines and the small islands in 1997 or with the female genital mutilations in 2000, which brought together the representatives of the 26 islands of Saloum.
