Homage to Rubens de Azevedo

The Planetarium was named after the Ceará Astronomer who created the first Brazilian Society of Friends of Astronomy (SBAA) in 1947. The following year, 1948, Rubens de Azevedo founded the first Brazilian popular observatory, the Popular Flammarion Observatory, and the Brazilian Society of Selenography in São Paulo. He was responsible for creating associations and clubs for astronomy and observatories and planetariums in Brazil, as well as being the precursor in the struggle for the establishment of a planetarium in Ceará.

Among other contributions, Rubens designed the First Brazilian Lunar Map, with 80 cm, which is exposed in the National Astronomy Museum. He also discovered a lunar valley during a lunar eclipse, whose existence had been confirmed by astronomers, who suggested to the National Astronomical Union the attribution of the name "Vale Azevedo".

He was professor of Selenography at the Municipal School of Astrophysics in São Paulo, of Astronomy and Astronautics at the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters of Sorocaba, and professor of Astronomical Geography at the State University of Ceará.
