Schloss Colonster

Description

Colonster Castle is located on a rocky spur overlooking the Ourthe Valley, at the entrance to Liege. The Castle and its Park belongs to the University of Liège since 1963 and are part of the domain of Sart-Tilman.

History

Attested from the 14th century, the Castle has its current appearance to Henri-Maximilien-Hyacinthe, Count of Horion: the eighteenth-century work transformed the castle into a pleasure castle. The decoration work of the castle is Paul-Joseph Delcloche work.

Mathias-Guillaume of Louvrex, jurist and lawyer, acquires the land and the seigneury of Colonster in the year 1787. The baron of Hasselbrouck bought the castle in the year 1788; the property then passes to the hands of the families of Selys-Longchamp, barons of Chestret (1863-1882), the Baroness of Waha (1882-1891), baron Allard (1891-1920), then van Zuylen  in 1920.

In 1963, the University of Liège bought the Castle and surrounding land around baron P. van Zuylen. In 1966, fire destroyed a large part of the castle: the restoration and adaptation works to contemporary purposes (receptions and meetings rooms) were carried out by the architects Henri Lacoste and Jean Opdenberg.
