Rue Dong Khoi

Description

Rue Catinat (in English Catinat street) is a street, called Dong Khoi, in Ho Chi Minh City, the former Saigon. It was named after the French war ship "Catinat" which participated in the attacks of the middle of the 19th century by the France when it was intending to take control of Vietnam. The ship itself honored Nicolas Catinat, Marshal of France of the 17th and 18th centuries; But the application of the name to the prominent Street was intended to remind the walkers of the first step towards the control of a nation defeated by a colonial power. Before its current incarnation, visitors to Dong Khoi in Saigon will remember Tu Do Street, as the Vietnamese called it after the departure of the French.

The street is where numbers of famous colonial buildings are located:

  • Continental hotel, the trainer of the former foreign journalists. Restored slightly earlier than the other hotels, it has a more Vietnamese feeling and is cheaper. The open-air bar is gone, but the lobby was furnished with rattan.
  •  Majestic hotel, is located where the street meets the Saigon River. Built in 1925, with a central courtyard and a roof bar. French Food, french prices.
  •
  •  Grand Hotel, at the next corner of the Majestic. A very French restoration of cream stucco and dark mahogany in white marble, companions of magic. The original building, Fowler's and Phuong's home in The Quiet American can be seen among the pictures in the biography of the author Norman Sherry.
  •  Palace Café, a bar, also renovated.
